Carleton University
Co-operative Education

During my years at Carleton University, I was involved in the Co-operative Education option for my Bachelor of Computer Science degree. This option provided four four month work terms spread throughout the degree, helping to introduce a workplace environment which encouraged proper software development practices in a team environment.

For my first two work terms – which ran consecutively – I worked at NAV Canada with the Integrated Information Display Systems Group (IIDS). The IIDS group is involved with the integration and display of 15 systems and subsystems which deal with air traffic control, weather monitoring, and other related air navigation services. In the reports available below I discuss some of the smaller projects which I had the opportunity to work on, along with providing an overview of Nav Canada and the IIDS group as relating to my experiences during the eight month work term.

My third and fourth work terms were also spent at NAV Canada, although this time I worked with the Flight Information Systems Automation (FISA) group, which provides software and hardware solutions used by both Air Navigation Services employees and the general public. The systems include components which provide weather monitoring information and flight planning abilities to end users in the aviation industry. During both of these four month work terms I was involved extensively with the development of a new web application in development; The Collaborative Flight Planning System. The report submitted for the first of these two terms is also available below.
